The Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar gets ready with Tokyo 2020 in view

The 51st edition of the important Olympic Classes regatta held in Mallorca will welcome some of the best world sailors that will battle for victory in a season marked by the Summer Olympic Games.

The organisation of the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar is fully operational following the opening of the entries and the publishing of the Notice of Race. The Mallorca regatta will be held in the bay of Palma from 25th March to 4th April 2020.

The 51st edition of the great Spanish Olympic Classes regatta will be particularly relevant because it is an Olympic year. Some of the top world sailors will  meet in the bay of Palma  in a preview of what may happen this coming summer at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (24th July to 9th August).

Therefore, the Sofía Iberostar, organised by Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa and Real Club Náutico de Palma with the support of the Federación Balear de Vela expects a high participation of around 1000 sailors from over 50 nations competing in ten Olympic classes, Dragon and ORC yachts.

Ferran Muniesa, Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar Director explained that, being an Olympic year, many countries will decide their national Olympic teams in Mallorca and therefore, he highlighted “the goal is to keep the highest level possible of the event organisation”.

In this year’s edition, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa will be the venue of classes Laser and Laser Radial as well as the Windsurf (RS:X) men and women while Club Nàutic S’Arenal will host the remaining Olympic Classes (470M, 470W, 49er, 49er FX, Finn and Nacra17). On the other hand, Real Club Náutico de Palma will be the venue of the Dragon class and the ORC yachts.

In fact, the Dragon and ORC yachts will be the starting point of the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar. Racing will take place from 26th to 29th March in Real Club Náutico de Palma. For the Dragon fleet it will be a Grand Prix event so the organisers expect a fleet of around fifty boats.

Olympic classes will race from 30th March to 4th April, the last day being reserved to the Medal Races, which are the final races scoring double points in which the best top sailors battle for the title.

The Trofeo Princesa Sofía Iberostar, the first major event of the European Olympic sailing season, will once again have the collaboration of Marine Pool, Trasmediterranea and Europcar as well as Iberostar as main sponsor. Furthermore, Electric powered outboard company Torqeedo and the Playa de Palma business association, Palma Beach join the list of collaborators this year. The regatta also has the institutional support of the Balearic Government through its Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB), the Consell de Mallorca as well as Palma and Llucmajor City councils
