Purobeach Women’s Cup: women’s time

Purobeach promotes equality and the integration with the sponsorship of the new women’s class of the 38 Copa del Rey MAPFRE.

Purobeach has decided that this is the year to revalue their collaboration with the Copa del Rey MAPFRE by supporting womens sailing through sponsoring the Women's Cup; a pioneer category where teams, formed exclusively by women, will sail aboard the one-design Viper 640 boats.

This is the fourth year that Purobeach will be participating in the Copa del Rey Mapfre, one of the most prestigious and consolidated cruise regattas in the world.

Beltrán Álvarez de Estrada, CEO of Puro Group, says that this sponsorship represents a "qualitative leap" in his relationship with the Copa del Rey Mapfre. "It is a project that reflects the values of our brand as it promotes equality and integration"

At the starting line of this competition, which will commence on Monday 29th July in the Bay of Palma and end on Saturday 3rd August, 12 teams will be placed, ten of them being Spanish and two Argentinean.

The Purobeach Women's Cup will bring together skippers such as; Natalía Vía-Dufresne, Olympic two-time medallist (silver in Barcelona 1992 and Athens 2004); Ángela Pumariega, gold medallist in the 2012 Olympic Games as well as Támara Echegoyen and Sofía Toro, or Helena Alegre, winner of Palmavela '19 in the J80 class.

Vía-Dufresne praises the initiative that the Royal Yacht Club of Palma and the Copa del Rey MAPFRE have taken to create the Purobeach Women's Cup. "I think it's a great idea. I think it's a way for girls to have more opportunities to be there competing" said the Catalan sailor.

The Asturian Angela Pumariega, meanwhile, said: "We would love to be able to fight to be on the podium of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE, especially for the time being living with this great support for women's sports."

The Sailing Federations of the communities of Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Catalonia and Galicia have also opted for this new category, supporting the different teams and sailors who have achieved successes in both national and international championships, such as; Julia Rita (champion of Spain 470 and 49 FX), María and Pilar Caba (420 World Champions in 2018) or Lucía Guerrero (five Snipe women's World Cups).

The Purobeach Women's Cup was born with a vocation for the future since it not only wants to give visibility to women who practice cruising sailing but also to encourage the creation of new 100% female teams. Javier Sanz, president of the Royal Yacht Club of Palma and promoter of the project, points out that it’s "the first step" and he's sure that there will be more and more women in the Copa del Rey MAPFRE. "Half of our light sailing team, one of the most powerful in Spain, is made up of girls. We have to move towards that goal also on the cruise."

THE BOAT: VIPER 640

The Viper 640 is one-design sports boat that more closely resembles a light sailing ship than a cruise ship. Those who have sailed on this boat confirm that it is fun, fast and easy to handle as well as very dynamic.

The simple handling is one of the most outstanding features of the Viper. Bulb keel and wide flared beam at the cockpit provides superior stability and enables a more powerful sail plan All units are identical, therefore the difference will be marked by the different crews and their expertise in each manoeuvre and the optimal trimming of the sails.
